Dangers of Over-Exfoliation
Over the years, it seems that skin care has become more about "peeling away" the bad aspects of skin rather than improving and reinforcing skin's resiliency and health. From chemical peels to microdermabrasion techniques, the trend has resulted in over-exfoliation. Abrasive methods have long been hailed as the cure for wrinkles, acne and other skin unpleasantries, but, these abrasive methods actually strip your skin of natural defenses that protect from free radicals which damage skin. The sun and other environmental factors constantly affect your skin, and, in order to be well protected from them, it's important to make sure skin is balanced in all the right ways.
Don't get me wrong, exfoliating is an important part of skin cleansing and hygiene; it removes dead skin cells, dirt and oil that can cause breakouts. Using a gentle face scrub once every three to four days (depending on your skin type) isn't a harmful part of your skin care routine, especially if you use it in combination with a face lotion. Submitting your skin to harsh chemical peels and machines designed to buff away the top layers of your skin, however, is not the best idea. This could potentially cause irritation and prevent your skin from defending itself naturally against bacteria. Make sure you check out the ingredients in all your exfoliating products and take care of your skin, because it takes care of you.
