A Day for Dad
Last week you got the facts about Father's Day...this week, take a little time to learn the history.Evidence indicates that the idea of Father's Day came about when the daughter of William Jackson Smart of Washington heard a Mother's Day sermon in church. Sonora Louise Smart wanted to recognize her father for all of the sacrifice and commitment he had to devoted to his family through the years. A single parent to his six children for 21 years, this might not cause much of a stir today, but made quite an impression back in 1909.
She began campaigning for a special day for Dads, too. Because of her efforts, churches and organizations throughout the area began celebrating Father's Day in June. It wasn't until 1972 that Father's Day was officially signed in as a U.S. holiday by none other than Richard Nixon (hey, there's got to be a silver lining somewhere....).
While the origin is still technically up for debate, no one can dispute a day that helps celebrate the special men and father figures we encounter in our lives. According to Hallmark, "Father's Day is a natural opportunity to improve a relationship, reconnect, or connect with a father for the first time." Who can argue with that?
