How sleep affects men's skin care

Want to know how to look better in one easy step? Get some sleep. Your whole body system, including your skin, needs 7-9 hours a night to recharge and repair. Fitting in the time may be tough, but getting the right amount of sleep can promote a more alert appearance, encourage cellular growth, and refresh not only your appearance, but also your mind.

Lack of sleep can lead to dark under-eye circles, puffiness in the face and an overall fatigued appearance. Although research is still being conducted, some studies indicate that the overproduction of stress hormones that can be caused by chronic lack of sleep can slow collagen production. This in turn decreases skin's structure and devitalizes tone.

Whether science is able to draw a clear connection between the right amount of sleep and how exactly this affects how you look, men should play it safe now by cleaning skin before turning in for the night with a liquid cleanser to remove oil and grime from the day and applying an anti-aging treatment to keep skin looking good. Then hit the hay and stay there.

Men and the science of sleep

Through the several stages of sleep, your body recharges energy levels, and promotes healing and growth. Sleep is also necessary for your emotional and mental well-being as well. Lack of sleep can affect your concentration, making simple tasks difficult to accomplish and leaving you feeling irritated or even depressed.

While the National Sleep Foundation recommends 7-9 hours a night, the hectic schedule of a modern man leaves less and less time for sleep. Not getting enough sleep can have disastrous consequences, as highway accidents caused by impaired reactions can attest. Yes, falling asleep at the wheel can be life-threatening of course, but did you know that not getting enough sleep on a regular basis can also chip away at your physical, emotional and mental health one night at a time?

But how do you know if you’re getting enough sleep? Consider the following problems. If you suffer from one or more, you’re probably not getting enough shut-eye.

  • Feel excessively sleepy or nodding off during daily activities
  • Take naps frequently
  • Have difficulty falling asleep more than twice a week
  • Wake up frequently during the night
  • Have respiratory problems, including loud snoring or trouble breathing at night

So what can men do about this growing problem? Read on for solid sleep tips that will have you up at the crack of dawn (and not because thats when you finally drift off).

Tips for a good night sleep

While there's no fool-proof way to get to sleep, there are many things men can do to promote a healthier sleep environment and get those ZZZ’s they need:

  • Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. This will establish a sleep cycle that your body will become accustomed to.
  • Avoid distractions in the bedroom. While many guys sneak in a few hours of TV or some work on the laptop while in bed, try to keep the bed for sleeping, sex and nothing else.
  • Don't take prescription medication or nutritional supplements that contain energy-boosting ingredients after 7:00 PM. Thermogenic Formula, which contains Guarana and Taurine, should be taken in the morning that way your body has time to process it throughout the day.
  • Keep the area you sleep in dark, comfortable and quiet.
  • If you are unable to fall asleep, remain in the bed and keep breathing regular. Try a relaxation exercise like repeating a soothing word over and over again (it has the same effect as counting sheep).
  • After 15 minutes, if you still don't feel tired, leave the bed and go sit in a chair for a change of scenery. Keep lights low, and don’t get up and distract your brain with television or a book; it might be harder to get it back into the right frame of mind.
  • Don't let pets sleep on the bed.
  • Avoid caffeinated beverages after 5:00 PM and don't eat large meals 2-3 hours before you go to sleep.
  • Avoid napping during the day.
  • Unwind before bedtime by laying a warm Eye Gel Mask across your eyes to calm the eye area and put you in a more relaxed mood.
  • Keep your diet healthy and exercise regularly, but try not to exercise 2 hours before you plan on going to bed. If necessary, take a supplement like Advanced Antioxidants to increase your nutrient intake.
  • Talk to a doctor if you are suffering from serious sleep-related problems like chronic sleeplessness or insomnia, restless leg syndrome and severe snoring.

Temperature therapy is the most effective way to improve the appearance of the delicate skin around the eyes, and it’s easily done with the Eye Gel Mask. Only fifteen minutes of use immediately revitalizes the skin and improves dark circles, puffiness and sagging skin. Warm Eye Gel Mask by placing it in hot water. Remove, wrap in facial towel and lay across eye area. After 10 minutes, remove and pat dry. Follow treatment with a light application of Eye Rescue Formula to promote an alert appearance and improve dark circles and tired-looking eyes.

When traveling, try to get as much sleep as you can on the plane. Although you might not want to mess with your normal sleep pattern, the more rest you get, the better you’ll feel. Invest in an eye mask, ear plugs and a travel pillow to insure smooth sailing the whole flight through.

What is Squalene

As a coach, wetsuit manufacturer and former triathlete, Paul Lundgren has taken his love of nature and the thrill of the race to craft a life unlike any other. Paul became interested in triathlon training as a college student in 1985 after reading accounts of triathletes, and was so impressed that he dropped out of school, bought a bike and set out for San Diego, California. Paul won several smaller races, competed in the Hawaii Ironman competition, and trained with some of the best athletes of the time.

Paul has also coached hundreds of athletes from beginners to experts. His finest coaching achievement came when he co-coached a team of 98 athletes for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training Program. Love of swimming and triathlons also put Paul in contact with the industry of wetsuit manufacturing. After working for a time at the largest dealer to triathlon wetsuit manufacturers, Paul collaborated with another wetsuit distributor and in 2006 created Fit2Race, Inc. (F2R), a leading manufacturer of quality triathlon wetsuits, and seller of running, swimming and cycling accessories.

Throughout his careers of training, coaching and manufacturing, a connection to nature has always played a large role in Paul’s life. In 1995, he and four friends swam 465 miles of the Salmon and Snake Rivers to highlight the plight of the rapidly-dwindling Sockeye Salmon population. Paul also supports Fit2Live, a non-profit foundation that seeks to preserve and restore native wild fish species by protecting streams and rivers. Although no longer tied to a demanding training schedule, Paul continues to have his hands full with Fit2Race, Inc. and Fit2Live, as well as raising his two sons in California.
