A Scary Season for Men's Skin

So the bare flesh of summer now hides beneath sweatshirts…and maybe that’s a good thing. Cold weather, sharp winds and fluctuating temperatures can all wreck havoc on men’s skin, so be smart and protect your face and body to avoid irritation, dryness and redness (check out the Advanced Face Lotion for the ultimate hydrating solution). Colder weather also signals the start of heavy eating season, so MenScience offers you some advice on the pros (and cons) of good eating.

Autumn Weather Skin Recommendations

Fall is a good time to step up skin’s protection against colder, drier air, as well as repair skin problems left over from summer months. Keep the following tips in mind to have healthy, great-looking skin the whole year round.

Re-evaluate your skin care: Summer months often focus more on controlling oil production and grime accumulated by sweating, while winter months should focus on keeping skin hydrated.

Products that contain high concentrations of powerful ingredients (like Benzoyl Peroxide) that you used during the summer may cause you some discomfort in drier weather. Keep using the product, but reduce application and use a moisturizer more frequently if your skin becomes irritated and discontinue use if it persists for prolonged periods of time.

Keep skin hydrated by applying moisturizer at least once a day, or any time your skin feels tight or dry. Applying right after showering locks moisture into cells, and repeating at night before going to sleep can guarantee you smoother skin the next morning.

Pay close attention to moisturizing hands and feet, which can become rough or cracked during cold weather.

Drink plenty of water to hydrate skin cells from the inside out.

Dry air can sometimes irritate the scalp, causing dandruff and even an overproduction of oil as the skin tries to rebalance moisture levels. Use a gentle and nourishing shampoo formulated for daily use like Daily Shampoo.

Repair damages from summer: exfoliate rough patches and remove dead skin cell accumulations by using Microfine Face Scrub 2-3 times a week.

Apply a lip balm with SPF to protect skin from extreme weather conditions. Although not as obviously beneficial as during summer months, products that contain SPF 30 can protect lips from harmful UV rays.

Winter Diet and Nutrition Tips

Approaching winter months mean more than falling temperatures and shorter days. They can also signal to your body to consume more carb-heavy foods and prepare for the long cold months ahead. And while such preparation doesn’t seem that necessary nowadays, here’s some advice for men to keep in mind to avoid packing on a pound or two:

Carbohydrates break down sugars within men’s bodies to produce energy. Men can’t maintain good health without them, but there are different types of carbs that produce different types of reactions, some good and some bad.

Simple carbohydrates come from fruits, milk and sugar-added food. Because they are processed quickly, they often don’t leave you feeling full for very long. Some simple carbs also contribute “empty calories”: they provide calories without any other beneficial nutrients such as vitamins and minerals.

Complex carbohydrates break down slower within your body and also contain valuable nutrients like fiber, vitamins and minerals.

Try to get most of your carbohydrates from complex sources like whole grains, vegetables, legumes and brown rice. Look to unrefined complex carbohydrates like oatmeal, rather than refined starches like white flour and white rice for a healthier carb intake.

While simple carbohydrates don’t need to be completely removed from your diet, try to get them from fruits and milk and not from sugar-sweetened foods and beverages.

Avoid the “empty calories” of refined or processed foods altogether.

Keep your exercise routine regular through colder months. Take a nutritional supplement like Thermogenic Formula Advanced Supplement to encourage weight loss processes.

Repair Dry Skin

1. Use Daily Face Wash and Daily Body Wash once a day to cleanse face and body. Gentle, liquid cleansers will not dry your skin out as many bar soaps do.

2. Always shower or wash face using lukewarm water, not hot.

3. Within 5 minutes of stepping out of shower or washing face, apply Advanced Face Lotion to your skin. This will lock more moisture into the pores.

4. Apply Advanced Face Lotion again at bedtime after splashing face with lukewarm water.

5. Invest in a humidifier to cut down on dryness in the air while you sleep. This could benefit your respiration as well as your skin.

6. For rough or cracked feet: Apply Advanced Face Lotion to them at night, then cover with white, cotton socks. This will increase greater moisture absorption.

Avoid shaving with products that contain alcohol or irritants such as menthol. These ingredients can dry skin out further and irritate sensitive or dry skin.

What is Squalene

First discovered in Japan, Squalene (or Squalane) is a highly-effective moisturizing ingredient that is extremely compatible with human skin (due to the fact that human sebum is composed of 25% squalene, allowing it to be easily absorbed). It helps maintain the skin's natural softness and suppleness, and can be produced from natural plants (such as olives) or fish oils.
