MenScience: February 2007 Newsletter

A Grand Slam Season for Great Looking Skin

Maybe it’s the chill in the air, or all those Back to School sales, but September will always be associated with school days and all the hardships they contained. Remember when a single pimple could ruin an entire week? When your face broke out with a vengeance the night of senior prom? For a lot of guys, these days are never that far behind, so MenScience takes an in-depth look at the causes of acne (hint: it’s not chocolate) and the best treatments for it (new Acne Spot Repair containing Benzoyl Peroxide is a good bet). Pay attention to your skin care now and you’ll have clear skin all the way up to your thirtieth high school reunion.

Solving Sports-Related Health Problems

Pimples. Spots. Zits. No matter how you say it, acne is something men have to deal with their entire lives, not just during the teenage years. But to properly treat this condition, it’s necessary to understand how acne is caused and what it really is.

The most common type of acne is acne vulgaris. This can be triggered by several factors, including hormone imbalance, overproduction of sebum (the oily substance on the skin) and growth of bacteria (known as P. acnes). While outside factors do not play a direct part in causing acne, they can aggravate conditions. These factors include improper cleaning using inferior products, food allergies, an improper diet lacking in vitamins, an imbalance of skin’s PH structure (since acidity is what controls bacteria), climate (heat and humidity both contribute to more bacteria production), and stress.

Acne forms when pores become clogged with sebum, dead skin cells and bacteria. Clogged pores can pop and spread oil, causing more pimples and lesions. For this reason, exfoliation with gentle, effective products is an integral part of acne treatment for men as it regularly removes the blockage of dead cells from pores.

Because men’s glands are larger and therefore produce more sebum, guys often display acne more often than women do, especially on their backs and bodies. This is also due to the fact that the male hormone (androgen) is what activates glands that produce oil and sebum.

By understanding how acne forms, men can take the first steps to managing and eliminating it completely.

Stick to the Game Plan for Excellent Results

Follow these steps to help improve skin tone and texture, and diminish future acne outbreaks.

1. Cleanse face with Daily Face Wash and lukewarm water. Don’t scrub too hard and do not pick at blemishes. Rinse thoroughly and dry.

2. Apply Acne Spot Repair to existing blemishes to reduce inflammation and attack acne-causing bacteria. Wait for product to completely dry.

3. Apply a thin layer of Advanced Face Lotion to face and neck to keep skin hydrated. If you are wary of using a moisturizer, mist Post-Shave Repair onto skin instead.

4. Apply TiO2 Sunblock SPF 30 if going outside since strong, direct sun exposure can irritate skin being treated with Benzoyl Peroxide and redarken acne scars and marks.

5. Wash face again before bedtime using Daily Face Wash and lukewarm water. Pat dry.

6. Once a week, apply a thin layer of Microfine Face Scrub and massage into skin after cleansing. Allow Scrub to sit for two minutes, then gently wash away completely.

To Maintain Acne-Free Skin:

1. Avoid products that clog pores. Look for items labeled “noncomedgenic.” (All MenScience products are noncomedogenic and free of irritants.)

2. Try to keep hair off your face, especially if you use greasy hair products such as gels and pomade.

3. Don’t wash your face more than once or twice a day, as this can actually provoke greater oil production as skin attempts to rebalance moisture levels. Don’t pop existing pimples.

4. Use the same treatment for at least six weeks, as it takes approximately 28 days for new skin cells to appear on the skin’s surface. Skin may appear to get worse before it gets better, so keep application regular.

5. Make sure to wash after sweating heavily.

6. Regularly use a product that will reduce acne-causing bacteria, such as the Acne Therapy Lotion, on face.

7. If you suffer from persistent or severe irritation or outbreaks, consult a dermatologist for the best course of action.

An antibacterial ingredient prescribed by dermatologists as the preferred topical medicine for safe treatment for acne. Benzoyl Peroxide absorbs into the skin and clears acne-causing bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) on the surface. It also acts as a drying agent to absorb excessive oils and clear pores, while promoting greater cell exfoliation and renewal. Because of these properties, Benzoyl Peroxide may in some cases cause irritation, dryness or peeling during the first days of usage before a tolerance is built up. It is recommended that sun protection be worn when using Benzoyl Peroxide and exposed to the sun’s rays.

61% of men admit that acne has an effect on their social lives, but roughly 90% do not allow it to bother them.

86% of men believe you should not rupture blemishes, with less than 5% popping pimples to get rid of them.

40% believe that acne is caused by bacteria, but only 30% use a bacteria-killing acne medication like Benzoyl Peroxide to diminish outbreaks. The majority of men (42%) prefer to wash their faces twice a day to treat it.
