A Healthy Dose of Paranoia Can Help You Avoid the Flu

Eight Tips to Cut Your Number of Sick Days                        Printable Version

WHO KNEW business execs could teach us a thing or two about staying healthy this flu season? Consider Andy Grove’s business theory “only the paranoid survive.” The CEO of Intel and legendary tech-industry entrepreneur says paranoia is a valuable strategic tool, used to keep a business healthy and strong by heading off problems before they can arise. You can employ this same tactic to keep yourself healthy during flu season.

These tips will help you maintain your peak performance level:

  • Shake the handshakes. It’s rumored that even real estate tycoon Donald Trump avoids hand-shaking because of the transfer of germs. When it’s unavoidable, use a dime-sized dollop of hand sanitizer to wipe out microorganisms.
  • When you’re out, wash your hands often. That means more frequently than just bathroom visits! Only touch your eyes, nose or mouth after washing because germs enter the body through these points. Use a daily cleanser with antibacterial ingredients.
  • Steer clear of the flu by getting your annual flu shot early in the season. Trust us on this - the flu shot will prevent or reduce the severity of symptoms of influenza.
  • Keep your defenses up with a supplement. Antioxidants are important in the body not only because they help protect against the bug but they also fight free-radicals which may contribute to the negative impacts of aging.
  • Avoid sickness like the plague. Whenever possible, stay away from people with flu-like symptoms such as sniffling, hacking or nose-blowing.
  • Feed your body the good stuff. Plenty of fruits and vegetables will give your body the ability to defend itself naturally.
  • Work it! Regular daily exercise makes the immune system stronger and less susceptible to illness. Exercise outdoors when possible and you’ll enjoy sunlight’s added benefits to the immune system.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of plain H2O to keep your body running smoothly. Avoid sugary sports drinks – they’ll add unnecessary calories to your diet without a nutritional advantage.
